It’s officially Harley Week on the Grand Strand. Here’s what you need to know.

The first motorcycle event of the Grand Strand season is Myrtle Beach Bike Week, the spring rally for Harley-Davidson riders who began arriving Friday and will participate in area rides and events through May 20.

Tens of thousands of bikers will rumble across the Grand Strand from North Myrtle Beach to Georgetown during that time, but most of the festivities are centered along the South Strand in Murrells Inlet.

This year marks the 79th anniversary of the annual event, and the usual haunts and hangouts include Jamin’ Leather, Beaver Bar, the Rat Hole, Suck Bang Blow, Myrtle Beach Speedway, Ocean Annie’s Beach Bar and many others.

You won’t see as much activity in the Myrtle Beach area, which is the main attraction for attendees of the Atlantic Beach bike fest that will be held later this month during Memorial Day weekend.

There are no traffic loops or restrictions for Harley week as there are during the Memorial Day bike festival, so local drivers won’t be affected.

However, the common cause of motorcycle accidents is when drivers of other vehicles fail to see bikes approaching at intersections or when passing on the highway.

So be safe this month when driving along the Grand Strand, and keep an eye out for motorcycles.
